What it does

This project implements an MCP server for the Notion API. The README notes that for the best experience, use Remote Notion MCP, the official hosted MCP server, and that this repository is a separate, self-hosted MCP server implementation that is no longer actively maintained or supported. Remote Notion MCP can search a workspace and connected apps semantically, read and edit pages in Markdown, and uses OAuth while respecting each user existing Notion permissions, per the README comparison table.

The local server is at version 2.0.0, which migrates to Notion API 2025-09-03 with data sources as the primary abstraction for databases, for a total of 22 tools. It exposes two page-content tools, retrieve-page-markdown and update-page-markdown, for working with page content as enhanced Markdown instead of block JSON. Installation requires creating an internal integration in Notion, connecting content to the integration, and adding the MCP config to the client.

Configuration

npm: npx -y @notionhq/notion-mcp-server with NOTION_TOKEN env (recommended) after creating an internal integration at notion.so/profile/integrations and connecting pages or databases to it. Docker: official image mcp/notion with NOTION_TOKEN env. Transports are STDIO by default and Streamable HTTP, per README outline.

Environment variableRequiredPurpose
NOTION_TOKENYesInternal integration token, recommended configuration method per README Option 1 for npm and Docker.
OPENAPI_MCP_HEADERSOptionalAdvanced option containing Authorization Bearer token and Notion-Version header as a JSON string, per README Option 2. If set, its Notion-Version takes precedence for every tool.

Security notes

Security notes
  • README warns there is a non-zero risk to workspace data by exposing it to LLMs, even though the scope of the Notion API exposed is limited (for example, you will not be able to delete databases via MCP). Security-conscious users may further configure the integration Capabilities, such as a read-only token with only Read content access.
  • Only pages and databases connected to the integration are accessible. Grant access via the integration Access tab or per-page Connect to integration.
  • README states this local repository is no longer actively maintained or supported, issues and PRs are not actively monitored, and Notion is prioritizing Remote Notion MCP. It may be sunset in the future.

An MCP server runs with the permissions of the process you start it from. Scope credentials to the narrowest access the job needs, and review what the client will send before connecting anything sensitive.
